Positive Motivation
- Occurs when an athlete derives enjoyment from completing a task
- It reinforces the performance and encourages the athlete to reproduce it
Sources of Positive Motivation:
- Coaches
- Family and spectators
- Teammates
Advantages of Positive Motivation:
- Allows the athlete to try and achieve the same praise every time they play
- Becomes a pleasant experience
Disadvantages of Positive Motivation:
- The athlete may become overconfident
- The athlete may never receive constructive criticism
Examples:
- A cricketer reaching 100 runs when batting
- Praise and cheers from the crowd
- Incentives/rewards for good performances
Negative Motivation
- Involves completing tasks because the athlete knows there will b e undesirable outcomes such as being replaced due to making numerous errors
- This form of motivation can be dangerous if used repeatedly as it could diminish an athletes confidence
Sources of Negative Motivation:
- Coaches
- Spectators
- Media
Advantages of Negative Motivation:
- May make an athlete try harder or perfect skills to live up to expectations
Disadvantages of Negative Motivation:
- Could be detrimental to the athlete
- Is distracting to the athlete as they are unable to concentrate on the task as they are more focused of the consequences.
Examples:
- If a golfer frequently misses putts, the media may suggest that they cannot win the tournament
