Intrinsic Motivation
- Comes from within the athlete and is an internal desire to do well
- Refers to an athlete taking part in an activity for joy and satisfaction
Advantages of Intrinsic Motivation:
- Usually want to learn more about the sport and their performance
- Try harder to improve their abilities
- Motivated to achieve greater goals and keep beating previous best efforts
- Longer lasting form of motivation
Disadvantages of Intrinsic Motivation:
- Athlete's stress can interfere with this motivation
- May make the activity more like a job
Examples:
- May play soccer as they have fun and enjoy learning the skills
- Competitive edge within athletes
- A golfers use of visualizing before actually making the shot
Extrinsic Motivation
- Motivation that comes from sources originating outside the individual
Sources of Extrinsic Motivation:
- Rewards (money, trophies)
- Feedback from coach
- Spectators, friends
Advantages of Extrinsic Motivation:
- An athlete is driven by what they will receive in the end for performing well
- Can help an athlete to perform their potential in a given situation
- Constructive feedback can be helpful in improving performance
Disadvantages of Extrinsic Motivation:
- May forget the reason they joined the sport in the first place often leading to depression
- May bring on its own stresses in the situation
Examples:
- Children receiving a trophy for playing a sport
- Sponsorship or prize money (for elite athletes)
- An individual playing for rewards such as food
- Participating for fame
